Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Beystiman It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
Bergorks If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
paulclaassen Surprisingly, this was more enjoyable than I anticipated. Yes, the dialogue is crap. Yes, the humor is downright silly. I just don't know exactly why I found this as entertaining as I did. Maybe it was the amazing visual effects. Maybe it was the unique story. Maybe it was the 'City of Angels'-ish love story. Maybe it was the devilishly handsome Ryan Reynolds. Whatever it was, it worked for me and I enjoyed this. (The usually good Jeff Bridges was annoying, though.)
aesgaard41 Back when I first saw "Men in Black," I wondered what it would be like if Jay and Kay had to go up against ghosts, zombies, vampires and other paranormal entities. This is not that movie except superficially. Ryan Reynolds plays a police officer who is struck down in the line of combat, but in some sort of almost "Beetlejuice" arrangement, he has to police the world's ghosts before he can cross over. Jeff Bridges is his partner, a former Wild West sheriff, and they can only appear on Earth "Quantum Leap" style as their human hosts, an elderly Chinese man and a stunningly attractive statuesque blonde. If you've watched this far, you've realized it's already more convoluted than "Quantum Leap" and less entertaining or creative than "Beetlejuice." Now, I know "R.I.P.D." is based on a more successful comic book, but maybe more effort should have been put on the script than the special effects. It has a few funny moments, several gross scenes and tries to be exciting, but the only good part is the repartee between Bridges and Reynolds. Kevin Bacon is annoyingly tedious, there are numerous moments that just don't make sense much less feel as if they belong in the movie and some moments seem almost incoherently tagged on (a house that looks normal but is actually condemned??) Even Reynolds own pining for his wife feels stolen from "Spawn." Bottom line, this movie could have been streamlined to a much more tightly and coherent flick. "MIB" had much better acting, writing, visual gags and a stronger concept based on the extraterrestrial phenomenon. For "R.I.P.D." to have worked on a "Beetlejuice" level, it would have been better to have some concepts viewers would have recognized without knowing the comic books.
philnaughton-77436 Knowingly formulaic with a shaky start and not requiring a lot of brain to watch, but staying with it pays dividends. It has enough novelty and heart to make a really good popcorn film. It's main selling point is the interaction between Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. I think Jeff Bridges is a great actor with amazing versatility, and his comedic performances are up there with the best. And no one does "I didn't deserve this, I'm hurt and I'm going to be amusingly rude" like Ryan Reynolds does.Conversely if you don't like either of these actors you probably won't like the film. Mary Louise Parker does a very amusing tough-but-vulnerable, sultry, smart-enough-to-run-rings around you bit which I really liked. I dug the retro white boots too, and the reason why she wears them is a nice part of the plot.Kevin Bacon does not disappoint. It's easy to think you've seen his performance before, but he does it really well, which is why he keeps getting these roles. This film should have been a hit. I guess with the Marvel Cinematic Universe riding high it's tough for lighthearted action to compete at the moment.I marked it down -1 for lack of originality - it's M.I.B with "deados".Favourite quote "I do and I certainly hope he got got both eyes, Roy".
Michael O'Keefe Ready or not; you don't have to wait for it. This action comedy finds a police officer, Nick (Ryan Reynolds), beckoned back to action after recently being shot. Nick will join the R.I.P.D. (Rest In Peace Department), in hopes of finding out who really shot him. The R.I.P.D. basically hit the streets "taking out" guys who are actually dead hiding in a human body.Robert Schwentke directs this MEN IN BLACK knock-off. There is a toss-up in deciding which is better; the script or special effects. For sure this film is not boring. And redeeming is the fact that justice is dealt with. Criminals get what they deserve. No doubt about having a star-studded cast that also features: the always hilarious Jeff Bridges along with Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, Mike O'Malley, James Hong, Marisa Miller and Stephanie Szostak.A catchy soundtrack features: Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye and The Hives.
