Isbel A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Prismark10 Gerard Butler plays an ex professional footballer trying to kick-start his life in America by becoming a sports presenter and be near his son.Butler plays George Fryer, who played for Celtic, Liverpool (he was there 'at that famous night in Istanbul') and also played for his national team, Scotland before playing soccer in the USA.A bit like George Best he has lived the good life and is now short of cash and in order to get closer with his son, he coaches the kids soccer team which means all the soccer moms wants to bed him. Butler still carries a torch for his ex wife who is planning to marry someone else.Butler enjoys playing a footballer who is a babe magnet much to puzzlement of his landlord who is always chasing him for the rent. Butler displays an easy charm but there is very little original in a story where the women are shown to be shallow and vapid.
Python Hyena Playing for Keeps (2012): Dir: Gabriele Muccino / Cast: Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Dennis Quaid, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman: The title references family but it really indicates the studio and their cheapest methods of getting money for stupid movies such as this one. Simple plot stars Gerard Butler as a former soccer star now a divorced father struggling for work. When he takes over his son's soccer team he becomes the target of every soccer mom within reach. The cast suffer through this embarrassment. Only Butler comes away with any dignity juggling soccer, his kid and the fact that his ex-wife is engaged to a guy with about as much personality as a garbage bag. Jessica Biel as his ex-wife is either complaining or shedding more tears than what a mop can clean up. Dennis Quaid overplays a rich parent whose wife sleeps around and eventually lands in Butler's flat in a sequence that is never believable in terms of how Butler handles it. And the outcome of it is stupid and misplaced with its lame shoving match presentation. We have Catherine Zeta-Jones hooking up Butler with a career option while really looking to be banged. The most embarrassing woman makes an ass of herself with her crying approach and showing up unannounced at his apartment. This is perhaps the most embarrassing performance for an actress of the talent of Uma Thurman. Director Gabriele Muccino fails to make this either funny or dramatically warranted. This film is nauseating and about as much fun to watch as having soccer moms line up and kick you repeatedly in the family jewels. Score: 1 ½ / 10
cj4567 A heartwarming family feel-good film, as it would be described on the trailers. This movie is boasting with an all-star cast, what with the obvious heartthrob Gerard Butler, and the queue of beautiful actresses; Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel, with this all star cast I was expecting a somewhat comedic romance movie which would leave me weak at the knees and all teary-eyed and what not (given that the director, is responsible for the likes of The Pursuit of happiness). Clearly as I'm saying this, it was not the case, I was quite disappointed, given Gerard's usual talent in this type of genre and the amount of star talent in this movie. I felt at times this movie was trying to hard to fit into that uniform "rom-com" category, I mean don't get me wrong there were some funny points, but at most times I found that they were trying to hard to add some comedy into the movie. Butler plays a retired soccer player George Fryer, who is trying to kick start his life again, in the form of his career, love life and his son. It follows his return to the town where his son resides and him taking over the position of coach for his son's team. This takeover is made difficult by the parents, more specifically the females, of the children who he is coaching who take a particular like to him and his good looks. The film plot itself is very typical romance and hence very predictable; ex getting remarried, broken relationship with son and a non existent career. I for obvious reasons cannot say why I predicted because then it would give away the ending, but as soon as he moves back to Virginia for his son, it is very clear. Now the movie wasn't all bad, the story with his son is somewhat touching, but I feel I don't have a lot to say as like I said was disappointed at this movie. Some of you out there are likely to enjoy this more than I did, especially if your a female who wishes to be Gerard Butler's next wife. I would not recommend paying cinema prices to see this movie, but to wait until it hits rental or sky movies.
tvmovienews Fellas, this is one that you would obviously watch with the cheese and kisses (misses). Or if you are a big fan of Gerard Butler and chick-flicks, this is also for you (guilty). Playing for keeps follows a former soccer star who has fallen on hard times and starts to coach his son's soccer team as a way to get his life back on track. Of course though, being Gerard Butler has its challenges. He gets swamped by advances by all of the attractive soccer mums, while trying to mend his relationship with his ex-wife played by Jessica Biel. For what it is, it's entertaining enough with some funny moments along the way. The cast is actually quite large with Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer as the soccer mums and Dennis Quaid who is pretty funny as Uma Thurman's cheating husband and powerful business man, who tries to befriend Butler. It is also directed by Gabriele Muccino who has had plenty of success with 'The Pursuit of Happiness' and 'Seven Pounds'. This movie feels similar to the Will Ferrell comedy, 'Kicking & Screaming', where he also plays a little league soccer coach, but Playing for Keeps has less comedy and way more romance. Still, if you enjoyed Butlers previous comedies like 'The Bounty Hunter' and 'The Ugly Truth', then you should also enjoy this.My Rating: 6/10For more Movie and TV News, Reviews and Rumours go to: www.facebook.com/tvmovienews
