For the past 60 years, a space-traveling smart-ass named Paul has been locked up in a top-secret military base, advising world leaders about his kind. But when he worries he’s outlived his usefulness and the dissection table is drawing uncomfortably close, Paul escapes on the first RV that passes by his compound in Area 51. Fortunately, it contains the two earthlings who are most likely to rescue and harbor an alien on the run.

TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Uatu the movie watcher Let me start off by saying that I think "Paul" was a good movie. It had a lot going for it: It's a great original story, the special effects are well done, the acting is great and I especially liked the casting choices. My only issue with the movie is that that there are a few running gags which just went on for too long. One such example would be Ruth using profane language. Apparently the writers thought it was golden, so they let it go on throughout the entire movie. It just struck me as juvenile and low brow. Frankly anyone with a double digit IQ should have stopped laughing at the mere pronunciation of words like "c*cks*cker" when they were ten years old. The Atheism vs. Christianity gag was another one which went on way too long. There's a big difference between poking fun at religion and uncomfortable mean spirited religious debate. I think it's safe to say that this movie crossed that line. I'm an agnostic, yet even I couldn't help but cringe at the preachiness and the lack of self-awareness in which this movie puts forth Atheism. It would have helped a lot if it was done in a more light-hearted and less hostile fashion, because as it is now they might as well have cast Richard Dawkins as Paul so he could call Christians mentally ill in his trademark smug and condescending manner. Unfortunately with "Shawn of the dead" and "Hot Fuzz" Simon Pegg and Nick Frost set the bar so high that any movie they made afterwards could only disappoint the inordinate expectations of their fans. That was the case with "The world's end" and unfortunately "Paul" is yet another example of that phenomenon. So while it doesn't do much wrong it is judged more harshly because of our expectations based on the duo's earlier masterpieces. Compare it to a painter, after you've seen an incredible artist paint a triptych of the resurrection you're just not going to be impressed when he paints a fruit bowl. So I give this movie a 7/10. Despite the fact that a few of the gags didn't quite hit the mark, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it.
Ivan Antonijevic This is one of the films that forces you to think as the author imagined, a lot of the stereotypes and weak arguments. It feels as if you are forced to listen to a stupid man that talks 2 hours. Yes, there are a few funny scenes, but it's transformed into "swill".It's not about whether you are religious or not, but the movie shows a forced belief of the author and without any arguments, but uses the stereotypes that are not really arguments. You feel like you are in the prison of stupidity. I really do not like movies like that. Also, it's very predictable, you just wait when it will happened, imposing the wrong model (drugs, bisexuality, "strong" language...).I think every film needs to have a lesson (final word) and this garbage have: smoke, be gay - it's fine, there's no God, drugs...Just do not waste time on this.
Syxiepoo I've seen this a few times now, and it cracks me up every time. My taste in movie genres is quite broad, but I'll admit it tends to lean more towards Sci-fi. My favourite Sci-fi movie is, and probably always will be, Forbidden Planet. That said, my favourite Comedy Sci-Fi is, absolutely, Paul. Even though I know what's coming, I still laugh out loud. There's been a long-running dialogue on here about the merits of this movie as regards religion .vs. atheism. This movie is NOT a sounding board for that particular debate - if indeed a debate was needed. The story-line seeks to use as one element, the interplay of the two beliefs (non-beliefs?) in relation to the existence of other life forms in the universe. Having said that, I worry that folks are putting way too much emphasis on these matters. It's just a very funny comedy film based on a Sci-fi premise ... and I love it! Just read my strap-line.There's real life ... and then there's movies!
lisafordeay I happened to have came across this movie last night on Film 4 and I decided to check it out. The film follows two British Sci-Fi nerds who come across an alien named Paul(voiced by Seth Rogen)who is on the run and is looking for his way home(like E.T). So they help Paul out and team up with another co-pilot who happens to be blind(played by Kristen Wigg)and together they try and help Paul out as a FBI agent(played by Jason Bateman) is after him.Overall I found this film funny. The special effects on Paul is very good as it looks so real looking(as Paul is CGI). The acting was great as both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost worked on this film and have starred in numerous films before like Hot Fuzz or Shawn Of The Dead. And the rest of it was funny too. Keep an eye out for Jane Lynch,Tangled's Jeffrey Tambor and The Lucky One's Blythn Danner(as the woman who first seen Paul years ago).
