Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Humbersi The first must-see film of the year.
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
leonblackwood Review: This film really did surprise me because there isn't any silly jokes, whatsoever and it had quite a serious storyline, which is out of character for a Jackie Chan movie. In this movie, Chan is playing a senior inspector and he is sent out to solve a case which involves young kids robbing a bank. With his elite force, he follows the clues to a warehouse but his whole elite force gets ambushed and brutally taken out by the video game fanatics. Chan manages to escape from the warehouse but he suffers deep depression after watching his team get brutally murdered. One of the team was his girlfriends brother so he finds it hard to face her and go back to work. He then starts drinking heavily and a passer-by rescues him from the gutter. His new found friend poses as a cop and he convinces Chan to take on the case to find the killers who murdered his squad. After piecing all of the clues together it turns out that the teenagers are just a bunch of rich kids who are rebelling against there parents and the leader of the group has serious issues with his father, who is the head of the police department. Now that Chan has stopped drinking and is completely focused on taking down the teenagers, he uses all of his resources, including his new found friend, to stop them in there tracks. The stunts in this movie were amazing and the crazy bus chase and abseiling down tall building scenes, were great. There really isn't anything that Chan can't do! Watching him play a depressing role was a big change to his usual happy go lucky roles but he done it well and he showed some true emotion in parts of the film. The fighting scenes were also top class from both Chan and his young sidekick and I liked the fact that the director didn't over complicate the storyline. Although this movie is called the New Police Story, it really isn't connected to the early Police Story movies, even though he is playing a cop again. Anyway, I enjoyed this lengthy movie because of the detailed action sequences and the fact that you get to see another side to Jackie Chans acting. Enjoyable!Round-Up: This movie was directed by Benny Chan who brought you the great Shaolin movie in 2011. The mixture of serious, intense drama and action, really worked in this film and the fast hitting fighting scenes made this modern day movie a joy to watch. The only downside that I found with the film was that it was a bit long and annoying teenagers seemed to be getting away with murder, literally. It didn't make sense that there was only one cop willing to sacrifice everything to take down the teenagers, who were causing havoc in the city. After murdering all of Chans elite squad, his fellow police officers were blaming Chan, because he put them in a comprising situation and they never show there appreciation for Chan efforts to take the baddies out. Anyway, I personally enjoyed the film and it's a "must have"for Jackie Chan fans. I recommend this movie to people who are into their action/crime/drama/martial arts movies starring Jackie Chan, Nicholas Tse, Mak Bau and Tak-Bun Wong. 7/10
Thomas Tokmenko The movie fluctuates its tone repeatedly, going from a gritty cop redemption tale and shifting gears into a mismatched buddy cop movie. The antagonists of New Police Story are a team of teenagers who at some points are presented like ingenious super-villains, then at other points like just stupid meandering kids. The problem is there are some incredibly unbelievable moments sprinkled-in which dissolve the impact of realistic and emotionally heavy scenes. To clear my perspective up, I do mean unrealistic within the realm Hong Kong standards. The original trilogy of Police Story movies felt balanced with the inclusion of comic relief, although for New Police Story the material at hand may be set-up too serious for such classic Jackie Chan antics. The whole warehouse scene for example was handled in the style of a cartoon. Considering how tragic the events that unfolded there were, I felt it very bizarre the antagonists were treated like comical super-villains. There is atrocious product placement in here as well, the worst offender being Lego which shows up abruptly, misplaced, and for too long. In all honesty I am nitpicking though, the movie is an extremely fun ride it's just too reminiscent of a careless Hollywood blockbuster than akin to a Hong Kong feature of this genre. The stunt work is absolutely top-notch, with many eye-popping moments that Jackie and his team are known for. The action sequences are especially well done and authentic to the original Police story Series, a must watch if only to see Mr. Chan do what he does best. Once again although New Police Story is a very fun ride, there are many elements which feel as if they either don't fit or don't belong. -6/10
Sassy Cat Definitely the best of the Police Story series, and one of the best movies that Jackie's been in. As much as I love his comedy, I really enjoy seeing him do straight drama. The story and the action are riveting and pretty much nonstop. A small gang of punkass teens are after money and have an insatiable thirst for cop blood. And they are pretty brutal about getting both. The way they go about their mayhem is pretty clever and twisted. One of the best things going in this movie are the teaming of Jackie and Nicholas Nse. Nse's fast talking, smart mouthed younger cop makes a perfect match for Jackie's seasoned and serious veteran. They play off each other perfectly with touches of subtle humor here and there. I would have loved to see them paired up more as this cop duo, but it's now 9 years later already and even Nse himself isn't a kid anymore.A definite winner. Break out the popcorn and settle in with the lights off.
proletarian-1 There you go, a bunch of chumpy rich kids, robbing banks and killing cops like old-time Rambo. HK police are so lame and unprofessional that they let an impersonator walks in and out the police headquarter like an Wal-mart. Oh, did I mention that they also let the lead antagonist walk in the police headquarter with a bomb in his hand, so that he can give it to Jackie's girlfriend and subsequently disfigure her. And you got corny melodramas. Tons of them, actually, mainly about Jackie weeping over his dead peers, and lead villain's profound hate for his police commissioner dad. And I don't even want to recall more about this terrible flop. Shun it, avoid it like plague.
