Ella-May O'Brien Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Kranadon65 You've probably watched tons of these type movies. Albet better ones. Nate and Hayes tries to be swashbuckling fun but it fails on so many levels. Starting with Tommy Lee Jones in his early days of acting or rather overacting here. He has always been a ham and his Bully Hayes is this blowhard who thinks he is all that. His character is boring plain and simple. OKeefe and Seagrove are also bland characters, obviously precursors to Pirates of the Caribbeans Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann - they have neither the spontaneity or chemistry that Will and Elizabeth have in the latter film. Hayes' crew is little more than fodder chewing up the scenery with the exception of Bruce Allpress's sexy salt-and-pepper bearded sea captainish first mate who has some amusing scenes especially one where he is coming out of a whorehouse. The villain in the movie Ben Pease played by the late Max Phipps does basically the same scenery-chewing overacting schlock that Tommy Lee Jones does. Comparing this movie to Raiders of the Lost Ark or any other more entertaining action film is ridiculous. The movie suffers from too much over acting and also probably could have used better writers .Tommy Lee Jones though is just not up to the task for this movie he doesn't have the acting chops nor the personality or charisma to pull off such a role and I don't think even today he would be able to pull it off he is just not that type of actor. I will say over all that the movie is worth a watch , just don't go into it expecting more than a bubble-headed type swashbuckler if you want to see another movie that's like this one check out 1978 swashbuckler with Robert Shaw. 5/10
thomaslstillwell This is a great movie, not necessarily the most historically accurate film, but its still a really good pirate movie. I'm not sure of the year this movie was supposed to take place but at the beginning they are trying to sell thirty-thirty lever-action rifles... which didn't come out until the early eighteen hundreds. throughout the rest of the movie there are a bold mixture of period firearms that don't really let you get a grasp on when this is supposed to take place. What I really found interesting was that it had a scene in the beginning with the rope bridge that was amazingly close to the famous scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... especially since this movie came out a year before Temple of Doom. No matter what... it's a good watch.
redelflady I loved this movie! It is fun and has a great sense of humor! It has wonderful action and is just campy enough to be a blast....Tommy Lee Jones is a great Pirate. Miles O'Keefe is good as a missionary, with maybe a little pirate in his heart? It is a great rainy Saturday afternoon movie with popcorn... enjoy!
André-7 One gets the impression that Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck were in the adjoining office at Universal Studios with drinking glasses up against the wall, listening in on the story conferences for Nate and Hayes. Both this wonderful adventure film and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were released the same year by the same studio, both have rope bridges hanging over ravines, cults and the feats of daring do... But Nate and Hayes is much more fun (for a smaller budget) and in the spirit of those serials...
