AutCuddly Great movie! If you want to be entertained and have a few good laughs, see this movie. The music is also very good,
emasterslake I saw this movie very recently. And I have to say it's an amazing flick done by 3 masterminds of Anime, including Otomo(who later directed Steamboy). All 3 episodes of this movie are both unique and well thought up.Magnetic Rose: The Date: October 12, 2092 A.D., the scrap collection ship, Corona has recently destroyed an old satellite deep in space. The crew members received an S.O.S. signal from a large heap of scrap. Heinz and Miguel went inside it to locate the source of the signal. But soon discover a world created by the memories of an Opera Diva.Stink Bomb: Nobuo Tanaka, a young chemist has been suffering from a series of colds. He went to meet a doctor who's said to have a special cold medicine to stop colds instantly. The doctor wasn't there, so he helped himself to the pills he believed to be the medicine. The next day Nobuo's wake up realizing that he overslept at his work all night. When he got up and head for his office, he noticed that everyone in the building is laying around unconscious(which he thinks they are). But little does Nobuo know is he became the strong biological weapon in the world. A stench that's so powerful it can kill a person instantly, even if you were wearing a gas mask.Cannon Folder: The everyday life in a fictional, grim, futuristic military city, where cannons are a common weapon and a defense system on every building and facility. The story revolves on a family of 3 who live through this organized and tight society. The son is a regular kid who hopes to fire cannons for a living someday. The mom works at a manufacturing like plant, while the father works with the cannon shells for the Big Cannon. The Big Cannon is the largest cannon in the city and used to fire on the unknown enemy they were fighting with. The entire episode is all done in one take animation(as in no cut scenes at all!).Those who like strange/visual/interesting anime might like this one. Memories is a memorable movie. It's available on Region 1 DVD, only in Japanese with subtitles. So if you like the sound of what this movie is about, then check it out for yourself.
mrtimlarabee I saw this some years before it got it's official US release. Sadly, under Sony/Columbia, this never got an on time decent US release, so will often get ignored by the usual anime aficionados. It's a bit of a shame, really, because Memories is a bit meatier than your usual anime. Besides the a-list anime directors behind this project, the stories have a lot more worth than your regular violent anime with bikini clad buxom heroines. It's also got one of anime's foremost geniuses behind it - Katsuhiro Otomo.Memories begins with the haunting Magnetic Rose, which has three travelers exploring a mysterious spaceship haunted a woman's memories. The idea of isolation, abandonment and long lost memories come together in a chilling work that is made all the more beautiful by the accompanying score incorporating Madame Butterfly. The next two stories showcase something that Otomo has a flare for, but is somewhat forgotten when Otomo's name is uttered. That is the fact that Otomo has no shame in doing satire in a grand tradition that questions such things as how a government would foul up in trying to avert a potential disaster and then how to cover it up and the universal topic of war.The first of the satiric pieces is Stink Bomb. It has a dark sense of humor about it, as people die so nonchalantly after merely smelling the everyman "hero" of the story. What makes it so funny is how the government handles this situation, often with ineffective violent force or laughable meetings with all the government leaders. The look of this piece is also to be lauded as there are often contrasts with beautiful flowers and trees contrasted with with all this death and destruction. Again, the soundtrack is humorous, upbeat, and utilizes jazz to evoke a light tone. This segues into the Otomo directed "Cannon Fodder," a more direct piece of satire which obviously targets the world's obsession with war and its use of force to solve a lot of problems. It's a cautionary tale where people fire canons at each other and a child is seen taking pride in what his father does and there is no denying what he wants to do when he grows up. Otomo uses a different style than we are accustomed to seeing. It's dark, and the drawings are rough and crude in comparison with Otomo's other work. This chaotic look seems intentional as it sits well with the story's theme. The look owes a bit to Fritz Lang as he separated different groups and classes, something Otomo would become more familiar with when he did Metropolis. The poignancy of the piece hits home though when the boy does asks his father who it is they are fighting. This exemplifies the wonderful ability of Otomo to not only be a great master in animation, but a relevant storyteller as well.
AnotherFuture I rented this movie one day and this anthology was very good. All of the shorts are based on manga by Katsuhiro Otomo and Otomo directs one short and the two others are directed by different people. Here are summaries of the shorts. If you want to see for yourself, you should not read these summaries: Magnetic Rose- This is the most thought-provoking short. Directed by Koji Morimoto (Animatrix), this short is about astronauts, answering a mysterious SOS signal, landing on an asteroid. The asteroid is actually an amalgamation of holograms, based on the memories of a mysterious opera singer named Eva Friedel, whose life went to turmoil after she lost her voice. Chaos ensues.Stink Bomb- This is the funny short, although the subject matter is not funny. It is directed by Tensai Okamura (Wolf's Rain, Neon Genesis Evangelion). A stupid scientist has a bad fever and a friend suggests to sneak to his boss's office to take a prototype medicine that could cure him (the friend says that it's a blue pill in a red capsule). Instead of taking the "blue pill in the red capsule", our idiot hero takes the "red pill in the blue capsule", and as a result, he not only is cured of his fever, but he also becomes a walking, talking bio-weapon that kills millions of people and wreaks havoc in Japan. Chaos also ensues, and the ending is funny.Cannon Fodder- This is the satire short. It is directed by Katsuhiro Otomo (the writer of the stories in the movie and the director of Akira and Steamboy). It is about a day in the life of a family that lives in an eerie country where cannons are fired at an unknown enemy. A little boy goes to a school where the teacher subliminally shoves war and glory into examples of work (physics of firing a cannon, cannons in math problems, etc.) The boy's mother works in a factory where they make the cannon shells. The boy's father helps load the shell into a cannon. As everybody else does hard work (fueled by jingoism such as "There Is No Conquest Without Labor"), some fat ugly person people call a ruler just walks to the cannon in pretentious uniform and fires the cannon. He just pushes a damn button, and he just walks there in a blaze of glory, pushing a button. He may fire at the enemy, but the workers did a more gutsy job than the ruler. Obviously, this is meant to be satire, as you'll find out in the ending. Usually, people might say this is the worst of the shorts, but if you go beyond the surface, you'll discover the message: War is not only bad, but it is a stupid/simple way for people to keep their minds off of reality by relying on imaginations of the enemy when they do not know who the enemy is, and those that question that might wind up dead.I love these shorts, but the only problem (though small) is that all of these shorts are from the imagination of one person. Sure different people directed, but they were all manga by one person. I'd like to see completely different people writing stories when it comes to anthologies. It is a small problem and I don't care. Nevertheless, these shorts are great and they are different ("Rose" is thought-provoking, "Stink Bomb" is darkly comic, and "Cannon" makes fun of reality). ' I give this anthology of anime a 10/10
frankiethefly This was an amazingly beautiful film, filled with great music that only pushed each scene along wonderfully. I thought this was a great piece of film. I have had the pleasure of showing this to friends that have always looked down on what anime is, and walk away stunned. Some might find these stories slow, but I think if you have any real appreciation of anime, you will find this to be an interesting piece of work. It consists of three stores. Koji Morimoto's "Magnetic Rose", Tensai Okamura's "Stink Bomb", and Katsuhiro Otomo's "Cannon Fodder". I would say that Magnetic rose was perhaps the deepest of these three stores. Offering a beautiful mix of classical music, with a futuristic settings to offer a sense of contrast. Stink Bomb being the more lighthearted of the three. While still maintaining a grim reality, and almost eerie sense of setting, using a more modern day look, and music. Then Cannon Fodder, right from an Orwell idealized future, with the loud sounds, and marches. These movies all offer up something different, and wonderful, while still working there way along a nice line of thought.
