Lawbolisted Powerful
Portia Hilton Blistering performances.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
claritadeb73 This is one of those movies perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon. There's no point watching it if you don't like romantic drama, it won't be for you. The story pootles along with charming scenes to do with self-discovery and relationships. I wasn't completely convinced of all the characters' motivation, it was a bit *Hollywood* with the artistic license. It is far fetched but that is for comic effect I should image. It's not laugh out loud funny, just absurd and farcical. The performances are solid, I think they save the shaky storyline somewhat. Ben Affleck is good in these thoughtful roles, don't agree with other reviewers on this. He's much less corny than most of his contemporaries in these kind of films. Cleese stole his scenes, pure class and not overly wacky. I did enjoy the soundtrack, it wasn't the usual upbeat pop-rock rubbish that 'quirky' romcoms are stuffed with these days. You won't waste an afternoon watching this with a cuppa while nursing a hangover.
Rob Streeten This is the single worst film ever made. Please do not see it.The problems with this film are principally with the writing, directing, acting and editing.Of these problems, though, the writing and directing are the most serious. This movie is narrated and even with this hackneyed device it makes almost no sense at all. The plot is paper-thin and there is no character development at all. The dialogue sounds as if it had been written by someone who'd once been told about human interaction but hadn't ever experienced it.The direction is sloppy and underscores the fundamental lack of identity this film suffers from. It's neither comedy, nor drama. The "jokes" (THAT teeth gag) are old and flimsy and the drama (really ugly violence) is completely out of character and largely non-sensical.I can't go on as it's making me angry, again. I want my time back. This movie is an insult to the medium.
grumpy736-1 After commenting last week on Man About Town I looked up Mike Binder on his blog. I ended up buying a DVD from his Freebird connection for $17 for a non-theatrical-release film called The Search for John Gissing. How could I not acquire it after watching the trailer for it on the blog showing Alan Rickman and Janeen Garafalo in a London based comedy about international business. If I had seen it when it was made, back in the year 2000 or so, I would have thought the film was the freshest comedy ever. But since 2000 I've seen Extras on cable with Bob Gervais and John Gissing uses similar devices to entertain us. Close, oh what the heck, still give it a cigar.
flashwok Just when you think Affleck can't get any worse, he, and his movie choices do just that...reliably so.It is hard to believe that someone with an academy award for screen writing (undeserved, boogie nights deserved it)can't select even a halfway decent script when it arrives for him. Or maybe people simply aren't sending him any good scripts because they have realized he cannot act.Regardless, I cannot in good conscience give a full review of this film, since it was so horrid that i turned it off 40 minutes in to watch Meerkat Manor...because it has better acting and a better story.chalk up another disaster for Affleck, a man who has dropped more bombs than the air force.I really do not know what else to say...avoid it if you can...the theaters sure did.
