JinRoz For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
Reptileenbu Did you people see the same film I saw?
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Kirandeep Yoder The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Len Leger I own the entire Lonesome Dove Saga, I own the books, and I've read and watched them many times. This one though, the original mini series, was what got me into it though. I love a great western, and I love a great western done well, and this one was done very well. An incredible all star cast, and just a great show to watch. I recommend buying the whole saga and watching it in order though to get the whole story line. Read the books too to get more out of it. If you have a whole weekend to kill, I'd definitely recommend sitting down and watching this, it's well worth it.
Mr-Fusion I don't want to muck about with hyperbole on this, but . . . yeah, "Lonesome Dove" really is that good. And even though the word epic has been vastly diluted lately, it certainly applies here. This miniseries ably translates the sprawling journey to the screen, a story that spans the length of the United States, Texas to Montana (and back). Characters converge, separate and reunite later on, the trip fraught with peril, but a deeply moving adventure nonetheless.Captain Augustus McCrae is one of my very favorite literary characters, and Robert Duvall is the ideal casting choice. Same for Tommy Lee Jones; theirs is a curmudgeonly but unbreakable bond. And they're backed by a cast that's pretty much everyone who was working in Hollywood in 1989.If there's a negative to this, it's that the claustrophobic TV aspect ratio doesn't do the vistas justice. But it works wonders in spite of the format's limitations.Good luck keeping a dry eye by series' end.9/10
collinkd22 Lonesome Dove is not only the best western ever but it's the best miniseries ever. It's one of my favorites up there with the godfather, shawshank, and the dark knight. It made me laugh, made me feel sad, made me feel scared, and excited. They stuck very close to the source material which is good because Lonesome Dove is hands down the best novel ever. All the actors are cast perfectly and play the roles perfectly. The movie is long but has no pacing issues. I would recommend reading the book first but if you don't it won't take much away from the experience.Lonesome Dove is a timeless classic that my dad showed me and I plan to show my kids too.
melissawhall Everyone who has anything to do with current TV should watch this mini-series to see what is possible, to understand that not only does TV not need to be crap, but can be truly great. Epic, sweeping, tear-jerking, gritty and just utterly fantastic in every way. The writing is superb, the acting Oscar quality, the cinematography and locations are tremendous. The chemistry between the characters, especially between Tommy Lee Jones' Woodrow Call and Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrea is remarkable. It's one of those movies that you never really want to end. And when it does, it's as if your friends have moved away - You miss them. I set aside 6 hours at least once a year to watch this movie - and never ever get tired of it. I laugh in all the same places, and cry in all the same places. Call and Gus, Deets, Pea Eye, Newt and Lori, and all the Hat Creek gang are some of the best characters to ever, ever be seen on TV. LOVE it. Read the book too, it's just as great.
