Interesteg What makes it different from others?
Maidexpl Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Logan Dodd There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.
bkoganbing I Heart Huckabees has Jason Schwartzman seeing the same rather conspicuous stranger Ger Duany on three separate and unrelated occasions. Schwartzman's a guy who thinks way too much and apparently has a lot of money to spend. He hires a pair of 'existential detectives' to find if there's a meaning to all this. That means having detectives Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin following him around all day and making a report.Ger Duany is hard to miss, he's about 6'8" and is a Sudanese refugee and doorman in the building where Hoffman and Tomlin live. His reality is he's really glad to get out of Sudan where they don't have time to explore the meaning of life they just want to live it without being in the wrong religion in their neighborhood. He's an interesting contrast to the rest of the cast.Through various ways the whole cast is intertwined with each other, but then again the whole universe is which is what the film is trying to say. No use in me describing a plot it defies description. Just a series of interesting scenes with a smattering of coherency. There's a notion here that people are trying to do the right thing, but there's no real right or wrong because even standing up for your beliefs can sometimes be absurd. Best scene in the film is firefighter Mark Wahlberg whose main gripe against the world is the oil industry. Wahlberg instead of taking the fire truck to a call with the rest of his mates bicycles to the fire and cuts down on the profits of big oil. Carrying principles to the extreme don't you think.Huckabees by the way is the name of a department store chain that is forever in controversy every time it's the flagship store of another strip mall. Poor Jude Law who's in management is trying to broker a deal about a new mall which will destroy a swamp home to a lot of animals. See what happens to him trying to do the right thing as he conceives it.I Heart Huckabees is quirky and not for everyone's taste. There seems to be a divide of opinion I haven't seen except for religious films from current evangelical sources that you either love or hate. There are some interesting issues raised, but the overall quality of the film is uneven.
kosmasp This right here is a very weird movie. And "Three Kings" (previous movie by the same director) does not prepare you for what you're about to see. A movie that tries to handle our being/existing in this world and especially tries to creep into a mind of someone who tries to uncover the "meaning" of .. well everything.Does it succeed? It does succeed in being weird and awkward that is for sure. It has the right actors to give it that special vibe too. Dustin Hoffman could sell you that sheet (and the idea of all being one and the same more or less), even Mark Wahlberg (also seen in Three Kings) can handle the craziness with ease. It's Schwartzmanns movie though and he runs with the wild ideas of the script. Will this movie give you answers to possible questions you had? No. Will it be able to entertain you? Depends on your mood and expectations
classicsoncall There may be no other movie that better illustrates the absurd by being absurd. Dustin Hoffman as existential detective Bernard is classic, spewing utter nonsense that often sounds reasonable, but ultimately doesn't mean anything at all. Like my summary quote - in trying to analyze it, the line seems to be a profound comment on the absolute nature of mathematics. On the flip side, so what? The most distracting thing about this movie is that one is always a few moments behind the events occurring on screen contemplating what was said a mere few seconds ago. The dialog by Hoffman and Lily Tomlin doesn't allow you to come up for air most of the time, because you're either stymied or laughing hysterically at the nonsense. My point is not to make fun of existentialism, the movie does that well enough by itself. It skewers those deep thinkers who think they can come up with the secrets to the mystery of life in a neat, compact little package. Personally, I went through my own existentialist period while transitioning from high school to college, and it was as confusing a time for me as this picture. So forgive me for making this a short review. I'm going to transcend space and time here for a couple of minutes and get my bearings before I take a walk up to the lake and watch the sun set. Then maybe, just maybe, I'll watch this movie again.
Cineman17 Like he did with The Fighter, David O. Russel brings true talent out of an amazing cast of actors. Jason Schwartzman played his part perfectly, as did Mark Wahlberg and Dustin Hoffman. Naomi Watts, Jude Law, Kevin Dunn, Lily Tomlin and Isabelle Huppart all play wonderful supporting parts. There is even a scene with Jonah Hill and Richard Jenkins that is absolutely hilarious. This movie seriously had me laughing out loud at some parts, but at other times, it becomes hard to follow and pretentious. The film touches on some aspects of philosophy, but never really dives deep into them. This gives the audience a chance to reflect on what is being said and try to make sense of what the characters are doing. It is a cool film, but nothing really great stands out about it. Overall I Heart Huckabees just manages to scratch surface of what could have been a truly great film, and instead ends up being just a pretty good film with some really really great parts.
