Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

Console best movie i've ever seen.
TeenzTen An action-packed slog
Suman Roberson It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
LenaAndBarry Now, while most comedies are pretty bland, as direction goes: I was actually really surprised and I REALLY appreciated the fact that the filmmakers genuinely put effort and creativity into making this. The film got quite a few laughs out of me from it's cinematography and editing. However, I wasn't getting much laughs from the script, which is a problem. Another problem I had was that the movie felt so rushed. They included so much that you never really got the chance to grasp anything.I thought Jim Carrey's character, Steven Russell, was pretty interesting, but Carrey's performance stopped me from really caring for him. His performance was just out of place; his over the top southern accent felt like it belonged in a SNL skit rather than a movie. There was a scene where Carrey was delivering, what was supposed to be, an emotional monologue, but due to his performance, it just did nothing for me.ALTHOUGH, his co-actor Ewan McGregor, who played Philip Morris, was pretty great. I heard Ewan put a lot of work and research into this role, and it shows. His child-like naiveté and trusting nature felt very believable, and unlike Carrey, I actually got choked up during an emotional monologue that Ewan delivered. EVEN THOUGH I knew exactly where that movie was heading, his performance still got me.Anyways, I really wish I could love this movie, but the problems I had with it were just a bit too much. Although, I would say it's worth checking out for the effort and creativity, Ewan, and the pretty interesting story, to say the least.
omairajmal2007 I think Jim Carrey and Ewan did a good job. Especially the story writing was very good. It is a nice concept but I strongly feel the sexual situations were completely unnecessary. There was no point of showing Ewan giving oral sex to Jim carrey and then spitting the semen in the sea. It was no only disgusting but also unnecessary. I think homosexuality is okay in my books as long as the details are spared. I am quite sure a very large majority also does not want to see it either though due to fear many of us don't like to admit this. I think Jim carrey should not get frustrated with his career and not sign movies like this. He will only hurt his career further. Just my ten cents.
alsation72 This film was oddly disengaging. Try as I might I just couldn't 'like' the main characters nor care what they went through. I feel more sorry for the real guy locked up for life when child molesters often get released only to re-offend.Jim Carrey looked way too old to be playing a thirty year-old. I'm not sure how old he really is but boy, here with that bad dyed hair he looks about 60. His depiction of the main character is just awful; like a hyper-active schoolboy with no clear motives. It was just a direction-less, awful, hollow performance from him and he looked awful. He is past his use-by; neither funny enough for slapstick nor good enough for anything remotely serious.I did not believe for one moment that there was any 'love' between the two leads at all. Zero chemistry, zero believability and an almost insulting and simplistic straight-man's idea about what it means to be gay. I didn't believe the 'love' part ... what was to love in that cardboard character of Phillip Morris? The 'love' part was the main plot device and it just wasn't evident or believable here.It seems the makers went full-tilt for a comedic angle here but more substance was needed to engage the audience. Prison life is made out to be so simple and easy, 'love' is just there with no questions asked.I wanted to like this, but it was a forgettable and empty mess; there's far more depth to be found in simply researching the story online. This movie does no justice at all to the real story. Bernie with Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine was a far better example of a quirky crime case made into a film. Avoid this one like the plague, its an insult to gay people and the audience's intelligence.
mirosan When I was about to see this one I didn't know a thing about it so, for like the first time (almost ^^), I went "quasi" blank and with one bad review from a friend of mine. Got to say for moments I thought this movie was like a soap opera but in dominant homosexual environment. I was wrong! It was a con-movie with a very neutral way in relation of showing the life of a gay man. J. Carrey and E. McGregor were great. Ewan done a fantastic performance and Jim has done some incredible scenes showing some true and false flaws (I think) in the law system of Texas. Direction wise I must refer there was an awesome work playing around with the viewer (it had to be done to be a good con-film) in order to surprise almost always (to the end was predictable but I've been caught with it). Good film for the those who don't respect homosexuality
