Alicia I love this movie so much
Redwarmin This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
blahblahblah12345 At first I was really enjoying this for what it was. The premise of being hired to get girls to break up with their fiancé's was really fun for a rom-com and there were some genuine laughs. But the film was severely lacking in character development, and I don't think I've ever seen a rom-com where the leading man was so much more unlikeable than "the other guy". I would have been okay with all this if the girl ended up with her original boyfriend, but of course they force the predicable choice on you which ends up being so unsatisfying because there was nothing throughout the movie to really justify it. It brought the film from maybe 6 or 7 stars down to 3 for me it was that bad, because it just showed the filmmakers had no idea what they were doing.1) They oversold the girls original relationship way too much... It was flat out said they had never seen a couple more in love and that he was the perfect boyfriend and the "heartbreak team" were only breaking them up because they needed money. Not a great start, but at least at this time time there was still room to fix it by revealing actual flaws in the boyfriend or actually having her end up with him, neither of which happened unfortunately.2) They didn't give the other guy ANY flaws. His only problem were his pretentious parents for making the girl feel like crap when they were eating, but I felt just as bad for him in that scene because he was clearly embarrassed by them and if anything he ended up having the most noble moment of the film by standing up for his fiancé to their faces. The whole "he was safe" and "the other guy is exciting" argument really wasn't established either... I mean he was willing to hop on a jet and get married in Vegas until the main guy interfered by spewing lies.3) The only background we get of the girl is she was once a groupie that caused her to miss her mom's funeral... Umm, I think the writers were confused. This had the opposite effect of what it should have had. They should have had her say that the time was the most fun she had in her life but she ended up getting hurt or something and was too afraid to ever go back so she settled for her new boyfriend because he was "safe" or whatever... Don't tell me she was an irresponsible bitch that skipped her mom's funeral because she was too busy being a whore. That just makes me think going for the "exciting" guy will lead her back down a path of similarly poor and selfish decisions.4) If the girl didn't seem like a bitch yet, by the runaway scene it should be clear. She doesn't say I'm sorry? She doesn't explain to her fiancé why she's going to leave him at the altar? Hell, she didn't even look at him, she gave this creepy smirk and bolted while he was left standing there alone for his cruel parents to just stare at him with judgment... I couldn't have felt sorrier for him.5) And to add insult to injury, they try to plug in a budding relationship for this great but now abandoned guy by pairing him with the girl's best friend that has been established as a crazy nympho that will marry him for his money and cheat on him as soon as she can. What were the writers thinking? Is there some cute irony there I am missing? Was it just supposed to be funny to kick a man when he's down? Well it wasn't.Really such an unsatisfying that exposed all of the movie's flaws and ruined what could have been a charming romantic comedy.
benjones-11 The first thing to say is that I loved the concept of Arnacoeur (it's original name, which is a blend of the French for "conman" and "heart"). The film begins brilliantly, and after the first few minutes in which the concept is introduced, with quite a few giggle-worthy scenes, I was excited to have found something original which promised to be fun as well as new. While I wouldn't say that the movie falls apart, it does however fail to develop anything further in terms of novelty, and once we are familiar with the team's methods there is little of surprise. And so the film needs to provide good, consistent humour as well as characters you like and an end goal which you support (bearing in mind that this is a rom-com, so we're not looking for dark intrigue here). OK, there are laughs, and a few out-loud moments, but not enough to label it as a scream. And it is the end goal which really lets it down.In the film, Alex and his sister/brother in law set out to wreck the relationship between Juliette and her seemingly perfect boyfriend. They have no motive other than the cash reward from Juliette's father. So, we begin to look for faults in this boyfriend (played by the lovable Andrew Lincoln). Is he a skinflint? Is he unfaithful? Is he a control freak? ... Erm, no. He is literally the perfect man - a kind, romantic, loving, handsome millionaire, who supports and cares for Juliette in every way possible. But surely there must be a twist in the tale in order to justify the efforts of our protagonist con team? Oh, yes. We eventually learn that Juliette is a bit of a tear-away girl who wants to live a crazy free life which matches that of her irresponsible past. And when she discovers that Alex is in fact a rogue and a rubbish and unreliable lover, she suddenly decides she wants to leave Mr Perfect at the alter and run away with him. Having found absolution, the end goal is to tear her away from it and revert her to her reckless living.I'm an English man, so maybe I'm being staid and unromantic here? Perhaps a life with a wonderful man is not what women want? Maybe my negativity comes from my country of origin? Yes, OK - it's made in a country famous for romance and flair, so perhaps it's a question of the French not wanting to be stuck in a relationship without crazy flair. I asked my French (female) friend what she thought of the film. She described Juliette as a "stupid bitch" and said that the film was "annoying". A little harsh, but it summed up my feelings - that the feel good factor had been removed, and you ended up with the "happy ending" being a lovely guy jilted at the alter, the nice girl turning out to be a silly tart, and her running off with the unreliable conman protagonist. So, in summary, a bit of a waste of such a good premise, and a case where the "twist" at the end removed all audience support for the end goal to be attained. Funny in parts. A good idea, but ultimately spoilt.
Mariela Perez-Simons Suppose your best friend is about to marry the wrong guy, but she has convinced herself that she's happy with him. What can you do? Call the Heartbreakers, a company in the business of seduction, the best when it comes to breaking up ill-fitting relationships. The Heartbreaker team is comprised of master seducer Alex, his sister, and her husband; and together, the quirky trio spies on their subject, finds the flaws in the relationship, and develops an elaborate sabotage plan. This time the assignment is Juliette, the confident daughter of an overprotective French millionaire. Juliette, played by Vanessa Paradis (Mrs. Johnny Deep), is about to marry a rich, kind, and handsome Brit; and the Heartbreakers have only a few days to convince the strong-willed Juliette to break the engagement.Filmed against the backdrop of the French Riviera, the cinematography is a delicious treat, but the ingenious script and the spirited performances are the two winning elements of the movie. The script is a smart hybrid between a romantic comedy and a light spy thriller, and it will have you laughing out loud from beginning to end. And while the finale is somewhat predictable, the twists in the plot will have you wondering how it's all going to unravel. As far as performances, the suave Duris is superb as he charms the ladies, and he and Paradis show a decent amount of chemistry on screen. The supporting cast is also brilliant, especially Julie Ferrier (who plays Alex's sister) and François Damiens (Alex's brother-in-law).Don't wait for the American remake; watch this original version, because--like its hero--is stylish, clever, and simply hard-to-resist! It's everything a romantic comedy should be; truly satisfying!
ihrtfilms Picture *** Watched in February 2011 Alex (Roman Duris) gets paid by people to help break up relationships and is very good at it, setting up elaborate situations to woo the woman in question to make her see that she is unhappy with her current partner before leaving. Alex's new mission involves Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) who is about to marry a rich British man and her father just doesn't think her's right for her. With days to go before the wedding Alex heads to Monte Carlo to woo Juliette only to discover she's a bit of a tough cookie, but also a babe. Can he manage to break this relationship up or is he going to actually going to fall for her? This light romantic French comedy is a lot of fun. Duris and Paradis are great together, with Paradis being more cute and teeny tiny than you could imagine; she gets to strut around in some wonderful clothes and the film plays out in a gorgeous looking sun bathed Monte Carlo all of which makes this a wonderful looking film. The story is a bit silly, but it's quite fun with Alex pretending to like all the things Juliette likes which means he has to sing along to Wham!, eat Roquefort cheese for breakfast and learn the dance moves from Dirty Dancing. These are some of the more funnier moments in the film and whilst the film isn't laugh a minute it is charming and easy pleasing throughout that has that certain French element to it that doesn't translate in American remakes. There are some downsides, such as the arrival of Juliette's old friend who is just annoying and there is little screen time for Andrew Lincoln who plays the soon to be husband. However as a light rom com this does a very good job, even if it does leave you with 'Wake me up before you go-go' in your head.More of my reviews at iheartfilms.weebly.com
