Laikals The greatest movie ever made..!
SpuffyWeb Sadly Over-hyped
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Jakoba True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
carbuff In my opinion, this is Demi Moore's best movie ever. I really wasn't crazy about watching this film, but I needed a compromise to satisfy four different people, all with different tastes. It was a somewhat complex Venn diagram, but this proved a perfect solution and a very pleasant surprise. To begin, this is not really a thriller, but falls perfectly into the crime drama classification. There is no violence or even any significant threat of it throughout the movie (except for one small part where you know Michael Caine isn't really serious--that's as close to a spoiler as I'm going to get). There is also little true action, it's really a drama. If you are under around 45 years old, I have some reservations about recommending this movie, because it will probably seem too slow. It is a throwback to movies from a time gone by, and while I watch and enjoy plenty of modern, R-rated, pulse-pounding productions, I really wish there were a lot more of these kinds of well-made, old-fashioned, good, clean films still being made. Once I was alone again, I decided to make it a long night and watched two very good modern cynical anti-hero type films, and after watching this film earlier, I felt a bit dirty. There might, after all, be something to recommend about some of the old-time values depicted in this movie. Just a thought.
santomstella Its my opinion, any objections are warmly accepted.( No spoilers)The story starts when a young journalist meets a successful old aged woman to learn about her success story. The old lady was the managing director of the World's leading supplier of diamonds. she shows the journalist a diamond pf very high carat, and claims she stole it and goes forth to tell the story, which takes place in 1960.The lead character Laura is a manager of London diamonds who is workaholic in pursuit to gain a promotion, but there is no history a lady has achieved that post. Michael Cane portrays Mr.Hobbs the janitor of the company. Things get interesting when Laura gets an invitation to a movie which she assumes to be a blind date.A loose plot, the writer wanted to plot a brilliant robbery, but with all the modern security systems, he failed to see through them. Makes an excuse and goes back to 60's when security systems are weak and makes the robbery plot. But have to credit the idea, since only man who can see through his own time can make a robbery like that. Then again the writer is ahead of the story's time.
SnoopyStyle A reporter comes to interview Laura Quinn (Demi Moore) as a woman manager in a man's world from the old days. Laura pulls out a giant diamond and retells the story of when she stole it back in 1960 London. Laura is frustrated as the lone female executive at London Diamond Corporation having been passed over yet again. Hobbs the janitor (Michael Caine) approaches her with a plan to steal some diamonds from the vault. When Hobbs takes the plan to an unexpected way, insurance investigator Finch (Lambert Wilson) is suspicious and Laura is trapped.Demi Moore always speaks deliberately with a smoky voice and I don't mind her British accent. Director Michael Radford has created a good sense of an era but the caper lacks a certain energy or power. It's a slow moving film where Michael Caine shows his brilliance. He is very convincing in every word he speaks. It's a little film that is well made enough. The caper is simplistic and has the feel of the truth.
merylmatt Michael Caine is an excellent actor, and proves it once again here. True, he's given a great script and some strong talent to work with. Not a big Demi Moore fan, but she did a great job portraying a woman in the 60's trying to break the 'glass ceiling' Stylish, without being flashy. Proves once again you can have an entertaining movie without huge explosions and tons of flesh. Of lot of themes are explored here - love, loneliness, greed, revenge, giving back. I enjoyed this, even though I'd seen it before and knew the ending. Caine and Moore make an unlikely, but great team. Highly recommended viewing if you like bank heist movies, caper flicks, witty dialog and of course, a few plot twists here and there.
