Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Kamila Bell This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Vampenguin I picked this up today as part of a 2/$5 deal, so needless to say I wasn't expecting much. To be honest it didn't exactly deliver a whole lot, but it was certainly better than I was expecting. Takes a long while for the plot to get up ad running, the first 25 minutes or so of the film drag on terribly. This time does serve to introduce the characters, though only one of them is really worth introducing. David Keith's character, Mason Rand, was a decent character who had some very funny lines, but the rest were forgettable and bland. The film picks up as we learn more and more about Torus, the mysterious object that rose from the ground. The CGI effects looked about as good as can be expected, which is a kinder way of saying they sucked. I guess that's a bit harsh, but the majority of the CGI looked very, very cheap. The only exception being the...er...beings in the Torus. Though it ended fairly abruptly, I think the ending was the best part of the film. Leaves you thinking, and I know that I'll be thinking about it well into next week. Overall this is better than a lot of modern day "B" grade sci-fi, but still isn't that great. Worth picking up if it's cheap.6/10
Jack This is about a giant rock formation that bursts from the earth somewhere near China. The US sends a team to investigate, while the Chinese send a few divisions of troops, and a US soldier goes insane. The US team consists of a scientist who's main investigative strategy seems to be pointing out how smart he is and how dumb everyone else is, which is ironic because if you actually pay attention, it turns out he's wrong in the end. Then there's the hard nosed government agent who does everything she can to keep the scientist from doing his job, based on the fact that he made a bad joke and she's mad at him. And then the previously mentioned insane soldier. So, we're in good hands here. The big problem with the movie is that it sets up a good premise: What is this thing? And then never answers its own question. Your guess is as good as the writer's. Very unsatisfying. A lot of time wasted with subplots that should have been spent coming up with an interesting explanation for the alien object. I felt like they expected me to use my experience with other sci-fi films and just assume that these aliens were pretty much the same. Or not...or, well, just look at all the money we spent on CGI - pretty cool eh?The action moves along okay, the acting isn't bad, the characters are all somewhat annoying, and the CGI is actually pretty good. Basically it's the writing that sunk this thing.
uscmd I have to agree with the wizard. i'm stuck at home on a Saturday with the flu, and luckily I have every channel Direct TV offers, so there's a lot to choose from. This is a very decent, made for TV sci-fi movie. Complete with philosophical issues, a few plot twists...e.g., 80% of the way through the movie, you don't know if the 'thing' is good or bad.The actors are mostly B and C level players. But the script, and their performance allows one to become absorbed in the storyline. As opposed to many, that are just so plain horrible.......immersion into the story is impossible.I can name 10 movies that have been released in this calender year, ones I've paid 9.00 to see in theater, that I feel are less worthy of 2 hours of my life.I'd classify this, as definitely worth watching for free....if its on TV. Not worth going to see at the theater. Not worth making a special trip to blockbuster, but worth tucking away in the back of your mind for one of those nights when everything else is checked out.I give it a 5.Doc
yojimbo999 "Epoch" has a pretty good premise, but oh my God does the execution blow chunks. I don't like to use the word often, but this movie is just retarded. The screenplay, the acting, the character motivations -- God. It's like a bunch of kids wrote this movie, giving the characters all childish qualities. The idiot Chinese Government, who SHOOTS A MISSILE at the big black rock thingy, and THEN blames the U.S. Government for their jets getting destroyed! And guess what? Later, the brilliant Chinese sends a division of soldiers to invade a foreign country because that country wasn't "big enough" to have a say about who comes into their country! What a retarded movie. I swear, I've never used that word to describe any film, but "Epoch" really takes the cake.
