Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Cat-Star4 I've been a die-hard Dragonlance fan since my fist year of High School(about 12 years now) when I discovered the books in my school library, and fell in love with the world it showed me. They quickly became some of my favorite books and are way up their for my top. I still remember when I found out this was going to be a movie, animated or not, my screams of happiness could be heard by the neighbors and I live in the country. I found it by browsing the acting list of Jason Marsden and saw him voicing Tasslehoff. I had loved these books for so long and now they were becoming a film. I waited anxiously for the movie and bought it not long after it came out. I was a disappointed for a lot of reasons. But let's start off with the pro's first. The voice acting and script was pretty good. The only real complaints I have with the voice acting was the children, but they don't show up very much. The animation that was not CGI was pretty good. A little awkward at times, but it reminded me of old cartoons like He-Man and She-Ra which I honestly think they were going for considering when the books came out. The parts where it keeps in tune with the book are pretty good and sometimes feels like what you are seeing scenes from the book, and the characters are as likable or as unlike-able as their books counterparts and don't seem too out of character (Except for Tanis, but I'll get to that later.)Now for the cons, and is their a lot to complain about. One the CGI and 2d animation DID NOT blend well. It was very distracting on how well they did not fit, and since they encounter a lot of Draconians and Dragons it's just plain distracting and takes you out of the story. I may understand why they did it, but it was still way too distracting every time something CGI would come up. Next is some of the story. I understand the about 2/3rd of the book was butchered out, and I understand why, but they left out a lot of crucial elements and changed things and sometimes even characters to suit the needs. Like Tanis is the major example. I guess they were trying to make him less cliché I suppose by changing his core motivation. In the book his issues were completely different from the movie. In the book his real deal was choosing, to be quite frank here, between his heart and his dick. not this stupid self war in himself between his human and elven half. At the beginning of the movie when he and flint fight the goblins he's upset because his "human half was too aggressive and got the better of him" in the book he was upset because the goblin he was fighting started acting stupid and got itself killed by him before he could get information. Except for maybe some self doubt and slight issues of exceptince his real problem was choosing between Kitiara (his dick) and Laurana( His heart). That was the core of it. Ya, he was searching for proof of the gods, but not for the reasons stated in the movie. On the plot railroad they cut out a very crucial character in the movie. A character crucial to the plot. Berem. He war critical in defeating the dark queen. And also on that note, Fizban is not revealed to be Paladine in the books till Dragons of Winter's Night which is book two. When I saw that I couldn't help but go "WHY?". The rest are little nitpicks. Like Shirak doesn't work the way they use it. It lights up ball on the staff like turning on a flashlight or light-bulb, NOT shine beams of light in convenient directions. When I saw that, I was like "it doesn't work that way!"All in all, it's OK. It's not terrible. It's not great either. there is a LOT for fans to complain about, no doubt about it, but it can also bring some enjoyment seeing the characters you love come to life (sort of)
Paul Magne Haakonsen This animated movie is a horrible insult to the legacy and legend that is the Dragonlance Chronicles and the saga that Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman built up.Well, I will start off with the few good parts that are to be said about this atrocity.First, it was nice to finally, finally see something from the Dragonlance world make it into movie-form, despite it being animated form. It has been long overdue, and it definitely need to be paid homage with something in the motion picture industry or the animated industry. (However, this particular outcome was not the one to do it justice.) Secondly, the drawing style used for the cartoon (for all except the draconians) was really cool. Seeing that brought me straight back to when I was a kid and sitting in front of the TV in the mornings, watching cartoons. There was that certain nostalgic 80's cartoon-touch to the style used here. And of course the voice acting. It was nice to see that they had actually managed to acquire some famous people to put voices to some of the heroes.Having said that, it is time to move on to the bad stuff. And trust me, there is a lot of bad stuff here.Let's start off with the story itself. It is a vague resemblance of the story found in the book. There are so many important and crucial things missing in the animation that it was unbearable and it made the entire story cripple and halting. And then there were the draconians. What went wrong here? What were the people making this project thinking? "Yeah, we will put this really lousy CGI animation into the ordinary cartoon style animation. Yeah, that will work so well." (BUZZER SOUND HERE) No, no, no! It was a horrible eyesore to look at the draconians. They looked like something my 7-month old son would draw up and then given life through a C64 animating processor. It was so bad!All the heroes in the story came off as shallow shelves of themselves. They had nowhere any depth resembling what is portrayed in the book. Each hero is just superficially presented and put into the story for what seems like a publicity stunt.I had such high hopes for this when I initially heard about the project was in the makings. And when I picked up the DVD, I was enticed by the beautiful cover art. So I rushed home and popped it in the player, and was anxiously awaiting for it to start. But only few minutes into the ordeal, I was yanking out hairs and thinking "this had to be wrong. Something went horribly, horribly wrong somewhere along the line!". I was left with a scar on my soul, they had done so much damage to Weis and Hickman's work, it was irrevocable. Now, I am sure that newcomers to the D&D genre and the Dragonlance campaign might actually find this animation good enough, if they can get past the badly-animated draconians. But for us who grew up with the Dragonlance Chronicles and Dragonlance Legends, this is an insult of grand magnitude. If you are a fan of Hickman and Tracy's work, stay well clear of this animated attempt at fleshing out Caramon, Raistlin, Tika, Riverwind, Goldmoon, Tasslehoff, Tanis, Sturm and Flint.
TheHande I'm neither a fan of Dragonlance nor do I know anything about the RPGs or novels which this movie is based on but it certainly tried to treat its source-material with some level of seriousness. Taking a risky chance with its combination of 2D and 3D animation the movie produces two types of results for both: embarrassingly bad and surprisingly good.At the beginning the 2D animation limps, appears stiff and flat whereas the CG works somehow well especially with the bigger dragon-animations. When the drakonians step in the typical minions' CG somehow begins to look a lot less impressive than the 2D which picks up from time to time in the battle-scenes. At least there wasn't a lack of effort in trying to make the characters look lively even if at times the characters' expressions and motions look ridiculously cheezy and exaggerated. On the voice-acting, nothing really stands out but nothing really annoyed me either. The frantic pace of the story is probably the film's biggest weakness as it tries to rush through the events of the novel and while it offers plenty of interesting plot-elements the film lacks a dynamic the pace would require to feel acceptable and which is only enhanced by the lapses in animation quality. The film none the less makes a valiant effort in trying to convey the story to film, the limitations in budget are most likely the reasons why the attempt is not fully successful, but the sloppiness actually begins to add some entertainment value to the film as well, so I can't say the whole thing was a wasted effort. This is a guilty pleasure for a fan of animated films, where the story and narration for once make some sense but the animation just can't keep up.
Jinxed- I just rented this movie, and having read some of the comments on IMDb prior to doing so I still felt "betrayed". I feel sorry for Hickman & Weis. To see that someone made this movie and took something so beautifully and ingeniously written and turned it into this abomination is truly a shame.I'm not going to comment on the animation (ok it was terrible), but even though the movie contains most of the main plot from the book, but it misses everything that made the story great. It has none of the intrigue, none of the character development, no back story to explain why the characters are interacting with each other the way they are, in fact none of the story makes any sense if you haven't read the books and can remember why things are happening.I won't go into detail with spoilers and such, but unless you're a huge fan of the series I would not touch this movie with a ten foot pole (and to be honest even if you are a fan you should consider not getting this movie anyway). Will Meugniot should be (and hopefully is) ashamed of himself. The only good thing I took away from this movie is that I reminded myself that I should re-read the series as it has been a while.
