Clevercell Very disappointing...
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
joemjv This movie is fantastic. The story developed in a way that made you always wanted to know what is going to happen next and it kept me entertained. The whole cast was great. Amazing performances by Vincent, Clive and Jennifer Aniston and absolutely loved the way Xzibit acted on this movie. Recommended!
SnoopyStyle Charles (Clive Owen) and Deanna Schine (Melissa George) are in a troubled marriage. Their sick daughter Amy (Addison Timlin) notices. He meets Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston) on the train to work. They flirt and start to meet more often. He's having trouble at work as a financial adviser. He's saving money for anti-rejection drugs for Amy's kidney transplant. After betting Lucinda that he could kiss her without touching her, they go to a sleazy hotel together. LaRoche (Vincent Cassel) hold them up and rapes Lucinda. She tells him not to call the cops. LaRoche soon starts blackmailing him. He tells ex-con Winston Boyko who works at his company. The sick daughter really screws things up. It makes it hard to sympathize with Charles who is cheating not only on Deanna but also Amy. Then he gives away the money for his daughter's health. It all adds up to a lot of wrong motivations. The twist is both obvious and unearned. Aniston keeps the movie compelling and Vincent Cassel is a good cartoon villain. However it is simply too manipulative and too many things go wrong. Although the bar bet is pretty smooth.
Wuchak 2005's "Derailed" tells the story of a man (Clive Owen) who's obviously lost passion for his wife and is dealing with the stress of a daughter with serious medical problems. On the train to work he starts a relationship with a woman (Jennifer Aniston) which slowly veers toward adultery. Things go from bad to worse. Vincent Cassel is featured as the love-to-hate villain.I mainly judge films by whether or not they pull you in and hold your attention. "Derailed" does this in spades. I was also impressed with the writing. Although another reviewer panned the writing as "unbelievable tripe" and "horribly written" the story struck me in a totally opposite manner. Okay, maybe parts of the story are unbelievable, in particular the ending's prison surprise, but how many movies today are truly believable? Some have criticized the story as predictable but I was surprised and impressed by the turns the film takes. And I never saw it coming.I'm not going to say anymore because the less you know the better. Stay away from the reviews that (without warning) give away the entire plot!"Derailed" is a top-of-the-line thriller/drama.GRADE: A
tomsview This is a clever thriller that could also serve as a cautionary tale – look what happens when you cheat on your wife. It is hard to say much about the story without giving the surprises away, and although we have seen variations of the plot a few times before, this movie really works – it is compulsively watchable from start to finish. However, the filmmakers couldn't let the movie finish at a natural point and gave it yet another finale. Not that it lessens the entertainment value but it does expose a few plot holes that were not as noticeable in the rest of the movie because of its pace and energy. The story is told in flashback by Charles Shine from a prison cell. Charles, played by Clive Owen, relates how he was a successful advertising executive who after saying goodbye to his wife and daughter as usual one morning heads into the city on the train. He meets Lucinda Harris played by Jennifer Aniston who is also travelling to work, and is also married with a daughter. Both seem troubled and vulnerable at this point in their lives. Charles is deeply attracted to her, and they strike up a friendship, which eventually leads to an appointment in a cheap hotel room. But things take an unexpected turn.Clive Owen is convincing in his role as the solid family man and reliable employee who seems to have a darker, riskier side to his nature – it makes believable the way he handles the crisis that his rashness has brought about. Jennifer Aniston gives a surprisingly unsympathetic performance – it is actually a brave one considering that stars are usually protective of their familiar screen image. However it is Victor Cassel who really stands out. I remembered him from "Irreversible" and "The Birthday Girl", where he was equally disturbing and unforgettable. He was also in the more recent "A Dangerous Method", and although that role was small, it was telling. The man projects danger as few stars do. It is not mindless menace but is all the more threatening because of the intelligence behind it.In "Derailed", the violence and the obvious pleasure Cassel's character, Philippe LaRoche, takes in tormenting Charles makes Clive Owens' character seem sympathetic. This despite the fact that he has not only betrayed his wife but also his diabetic daughter, eventually losing the money that has been put aside for her treatment, all triggered by his illicit affair with Lucinda – that's the power of movies to manipulate the emotions. The movie is many notches above the average thriller, and it is hard to see why it received so much negative criticism. When a movie gets you on the edge of your seat like this one does, surely it has passed the effectiveness test. Anyway word of mouth seems to have made it the success it deserves to be.
