SpuffyWeb Sadly Over-hyped
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Jakoba True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
Jenni Devyn Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
djfrost-46786 This is a great movie. Tons of famous actors. Sly did a great job acting. One of his best jobs. Worth a watch.
jffphllps86 The opening shot of this movie is fantastic; A striking aerial shot that is overdubbed by De Niro. It's the perfect monologue to set the stage for what all intents and purposes should be a crime epic. What follows is one of the poorest portrayals of police corruption on film ever. The Garrison dwelling cops come off more as heartless/mindless thugs than actual conniving/morally compromised police. It all plays out in a messy, overly complicated fashion that just left me bewildered and unsatisfied.
taylorburgdorf Stallone, who I respect as an action star...is put into a role not suited for his best attributes. The movie wants to play a a suspense building melodrama but it comes off as a simple Stallone who cannot see the forest for his slow witlessness. Later in the film they try to spark his aggression as a 11th round 'Rocky' type of fulfillment but it just comes off as a weak cop who has has just enough to nudge him over the edge. Justice? Stallone ignores it for most of the film and suddenly finds his guiding light after days/weeks (movie time) of plodding along being a sheep. Overall: too slow a climax buildup, weak climax buildup, and trying to force a stud actor into a slow, plodding role which he cannot play. Just feels wrong.
Python Hyena Cop Land (1997): Dir: James Mangold / Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Michael Rapaport: Community populated with law enforcement with a fine line drawn between those that obey the law and those that exploit it. It stars Sylvester Stallone as a Sheriff who hates his job but is determined to become a cop himself. A young cop disappears after he supposedly jumps off a bridge after two hoodlums are killed in a car chase. Robert De Niro enters as a Lieutenant who allows Stallone to prove himself. Director James Mangold goes for realism over action and creates a tension filled drama about corrupt law. Photography is dim and uninviting but casting is spot on. Stallone is great as a Sheriff longing for a higher position and pays a price for justice when his hearing defect is tested. De Niro is in his element in what appears as standard material. He tests Stallone to the limits despite the formula role. Harvey Keitel is effective as a crooked veteran cop who hides a missing cop but is really out to eliminate him. Ray Liotta is well cast as Stallone's partner who is on the wrong side of the law but will ultimately will come full circle when Stallone needs aid. Michael Rapaport plays the young cop struggling to lay low. Compelling film about the desperation to bring justice to a community that knows no such thing. Score: 9 / 10
