TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
gridoon2018 The story is cliched and a bit vague (good guy and good girl get corrupted and sucked into the criminal world around them), but director Rouben Mamoulian isn't very interested in the story; this is really an art movie that follows the surface guidelines of a gangster movie. Pictorially striking and well-acted (especially by Guy Kibbee, whom I've never seen playing such a sleazeball before), it could be classified as an early attempt at avant-garde cinema, decades before avant-garde cinema was in vogue. **1/2 out of 4.
Siliw I like watching movies about gang fighting and Mafia. But this movie I feel like director wants to tell us a story about love among gang fighting. But I cannot tell it is a love story or a gang fighting story. It does not have a emphasize side. That's the main cause for me to unlike this movie. But it does have few interesting points to attract me during watching time. 1) At the beginning of this movie, camera focuses on the wheels of those big trucks. These big wheels view and night time street together give us a heavy starting for this movie. 2) The first guy's death, Director does not use any direct killing or bloody shots to say that guy is dead. Only a hat floated on the river. It implies that owner of this hat was dead. 3) Two young lovers playing on the beach. At the starting of this part, it was a beautiful view. It had sunshine and sea. The kid and Nan was happy with each other. But after a conversation about future. They had disagreement. They argued with each other and tried to convince each other. Then the kid walked away from Nan. But as soon as Nan realized how she loved this man, she ran to him. They hugged and kissed just like the argument never happened. 4) While Nan's father and his friend waiting for the elevator, they were having a conversation. But director use a special way to show this. He uses the shadow on the wall as real person to talk. So I can tell they were talking to each other but can't see their face both on the screen. It was a actor and other actor's shadow.
Emma Faulkner I enjoyed this mob movie because it seemed a little different than other mob movies. In this movie the woman gets accused of murder and gets mad at the kid for not being racketeer like her step dad to make some money whos involved with the mob because he was just working in the circus but was really good with a gun. The woman gets accused of murder and gets put in prison even though she thought and was told that the mob would get her out. While she is in prison The kid comes to visit her and she sees him in this nice fancy coat he tells her he's in the mob now telling her how much he loves it and thinking she would pleased. But she is actually very unhappy about it because she knows something bad could happen to him, and the mob does try to get him. I wanted to see this movie because I saw that it had Gary Cooper in it, I have not seen any of his movies before but I have heard about it him and how great his movies were. And it was pretty good but not what I expected from a Gary Cooper film.
mikeneet Rouben Mamoulian brought together my personal favorite genre a great film with City Streets. Gary Cooper as The Kid delivers a fabulous job of holding the story along with real emotions. Throughout, Mamoulian introduces a new character with ties to the rest. All comes together so well for a fabulous film. Also loved Sylvia Sidney as Nan Cooley. A great support to Gary Coopers well balanced character portrait. Rouben seems like a director that made a couple simple great films that get overlooked. Yet for me City Streets is a solid great movie all around. Rouben brings along a solid plot. As well as great acting performances for the early 30s.
