Details

When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

Colibel Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.
Catangro After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
will810 This was a disappointment. It is amazing that it was compared favorably by some reviewers here and on other sites with Master and Commander - there is absolutely no comparison. I had hoped it would at least be to sailing what Caddy Shack is to golfing; didn't happen. Weak plot, pathetic script, "me-centered" teens expecting the world to revolve around them while struggling to become reprobate, improbable (impossible) plot shifts. The 2 stars are for sailing in beautiful waters. It is hard to understand that when so many positive elements were there - budget (obviously), talented actors, nice looking boat, great locale, that Hollywood cannot pull together a script and plot. I almost purchased it, glad I only rented on it Amazon Prime and saved $4.
mlhall1246 This is one of my favorite comedies. It's well written, has great performances, and some very witty plot twists. Martin Short and Mary Kay Place are great foils, both completely under control, allowing Kurt Russell to provide the twisted comic relief. The kids are both good, but the young actor who plays Ben (Benjamin Salisbury) is perfect for the part. Comedy is often difficult to explain or dissect. So if you don't go for the silliness of this somewhat raunchy family adventure, it won't work. But if you go with the flow, this one just gets better and better. I try to watch it about once a year. It always lifts my spirits, which is what comedy should do.
LarryBrownHouston This movie is worth watching. I think some negative reactions are from disappointed expectations rather than the movie not being actually good. One problem is that it's marketed as a comedy but I don't really see it that way. It's one of those movies that is more amusing than laugh out loud funny. I notice that, in spite of its apparent low rating here on IMDb, there are many enthusiastic reviews here and only 4 that trash it.Obviously, much of the fun is in watching Kurt Russell and Martin Short. Regarding Kurt Russell, the guy is a major star and goes waaaay back to the 60s as already a major star. If you are a fan of his (as 40+ years' worth of people are), you will enjoy watching him cut up in this whacky role. He's a lot of fun and since I've been a fan since 1967's Flubber, I really enjoyed his entire performance.I'm a big Martin Short fan but so often his roles in movies are restrained, e.g. The Three Amigos. I'm not really sure what he is shooting for in that persona, but if you like him he can come across as charming in whatever he says or does. In this case his character is again restrained, the straight guy, and on the annoying side, plus he's a little bit of a loser. None of that seems like a formula for success and I don't really think the character or performance works all that well but since I like him he comes across as charming for me.The movie is largely an adventure and it works on that level. A lot of things go wrong and I don't like that type of movie but it doesn't hit that close to home for me because I've never tried to quit my job and take a boat across the world. So the situations seems so outlandish that I can laugh them off without feeling Martin's pain.Anyway, as many others here have said, it's pretty good and especially if you're a fan of either or both of the stars, it's worth watching.
rich_ardw If you enjoy Walt Disney style movies I think you'll like Captain Ron. Is it gut busting comedy? No, it's a put a smile on your face and chuckle at many of the situations type movie; thoroughly enjoyable. It is subtle comedy, situations that you can almost see yourself / family having if you were to inherit a sailboat.Martin Short is perfect for the part of the bumbling husband, married to Disney-style-hot Mary Kay Place. The part of Caroline played by Meadow Sisto is kind of weak, but Benjamin Salisbury as Benjamin Harvey does a very good job with his role. Kurt Russell was an excellent choice for Captain Ron, someone you'd like to know but not live next door to. If you were going on a Caribbean romp, you'd like to go with Captain Ron.My wife and I both enjoyed it enough to buy the VHS version and watch it from time to time over the years. While not a squeaky clean G, it's a solid PG and one you can view on 'family movie night'. I've always been surprised that it didn't rate higher. It's a very good movie.
