Huievest Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Salazar "Balto" -the first one- is one of my all-time favourite flicks. When I found out that there was a "Balto 2" via "The Grinch" on video, I was really excited and really wanted to see it. Years later we got "Balto" & "Balto 2" on DVD and we all watched the second movie first and I was ultimately disappointed. The story: Balto and Jenna get together and have puppies. However, Balto keeps on and on having dreams about pursuing a raven that just beckons him. All but one of the puppies is adopted and the one who doesn't- who's called Aleu (atrociously voiced by Lacey Charbet)- has no idea why. Balto tells her that he's half wolf and she's inherited the wolf look. Aleu gets all upset and runs away. Balto sets out to find her with the help of the raven and must overcome some tests about a fox, a mongoose gang, a bear and elk with Aleu who finds out who she really is along the way and her destiny (which is to lead a pack of wolves after their elderly leader is nearing death). The reasons why I don't like this film?: Terrible animation (the characters don't even look the same from the fist film!), stupid songs, a dire story all together and what I think is the cherry on top of it all, they don't have the original voice actors! In short: don't waste your life on this.
Kristine Since my friend lent me the movie Balto, I decided to see what the sequels were all about and also show it to my cousin, maybe he might get into it as well since he's 5 and he really liked it and so did I. Balto 2 may not have been up to par with the first Balto, but it did just as well with the story. I think because so many children could relate to where they stand in the world, they know they belong with Mom and Dad, but where does their life go? Balto now has kids, including a little wolf named Aleu, Aleu doesn't understand why her sisters and brothers were adopted and why she wasn't. Balto finally explains how she looks more like a wolf than a dog and she freaks out and runs away. Balto goes to find her, in the end, they meet another wolf pack who is running out of food and need a new leader to guide them to food and start a new generation of wolves. Aleu is finally discovering her place in the world. The animation was great and so was the story, I wish they didn't cut the ending so shortly, but I understand, kids usually have a short attention span, so it's all good. But I would recommend Balto II: Wolf Quest for a good family film to watch together. It was a really sweet and lovely film that anyone could be touched by.6/10
TheCuddlyBalrog I have yet to see a DTV sequel that did not completely butcher the original and make me want to run a sledgehammer through my VCR. Balto II: Wolf Quest is no exception. I might have been able to overlook the poor animation if the plot had been decent, but we've seen it a million times. The writers decide to produce offspring from the original movie's hero, and then follow their angst plight through adolescence. The voice casting for Aleu was horrid, a stronger female voice would have done wonders for her characters. And that mouse... oy. He howled for crying out loud! I'm sorry, but that's just beyond laughable, and not in a good way. The wolves were horribly drawn, especially the three "mean" ones. Were these a tribute too the three sled dogs that always trailed after Steele? They, as well as their leader looked more like rats crossed with panthers. The animators seem to have fallen into the horrible cliché of "Wanna make a baddie? Give him an over-sized chin!" Yick. Then there were all the overdone and overUSED Indian references. Since it's Alaska, couldn't they at least gone with Eskimo legends, since they were so intent on dumping spiritualism on us? The glowing eye effect lost it's charm... as soon as I saw it. I just wish these people will stop pumping out sequels for the sake of a dollar. Make something that's worthy of theater release, and that lives up to it's predecessor.
aleusong This was a must see during my Balto obsession phase back in high school. Yes, it's crudely drawn TV animation and not one single person from the original Balto (that I am aware of) bothered to work on this movie released by Universal Toons as an attempt to copy off Disney's lack of originality. (Note: They ALMOST got Kevin Bacon to come back, ALMOST)Any the movie...the one thing I remember was that I though it was terrible as soon as we heard Jenna I went nuts. (Why Jodie Benson? She's done terrible renditions of Anita (101 Dalmations 2) and Lady (Lady and the Tramp 2). Why Jenna?! Why couldn't they find someone who was much much closer to the personality of Bridget Fonda's character. Jodie Benson was great as Ariel and that is what she should stay. You know you're watching a video sequel when you hear Jodie Benson destroying an important female character and pushing her into the background. That's all Jenna, Boris, Muk and Luk were. They were gone before the second half of the movie and never returned. Actually this was a good thing because I could remember not being able to handle the torture of hearing and looking at these poorly done old characters. My only other complaint was the CGI. I know it's kinda cool in the dream sequences but geez, couldn't these animators at least bother to make it more blendable with the animation?! Are they taking us Balto fans for suckers or just the kids?!There are good things to like. As I said the movie for me actually got better and recovered from our character dissapointments. Aleu is voiced by Lacey Chabert who is also doomed to doing nothing but DTV sequels but I believe this character fitted her. (Yeah I know, Aleu should still be a puppy if only a year passed right? Oh well) And we cant forget how much of this plot was taking hmm lemme go down the list: Little Mermaid II, Lady and the Tramp II, 101 Dalmations II, and the big daddy: Lion King II. Yes the overprotective father and his rebellious daughter returns but don't worry folks, Balto's character isn't destroyed like Simba's was in the sequel. But some of the acting was lame. "Finding yourself," blah blah blah. Who cares?OK the plot seems kinda pointless until we get to the wolves. now it all comes together and we actually have a plot. Niju's henchman however were unnecessary. I felt as though I was watching a Saturday morning cartoon with these guys. The wolves needed more character than comic relief. I say this is a different type of DTV sequel because well, check out the end...it's not your average DTV ending.Last but not least songs, wow the songs. They're actually good. Still a bit DTV cheesy but still memorable. Someone needs to get on phone with Universal and say "Come on people! If Disney can chug out pointless soundtracks to their crappy DTV sequels, so can you!" This is really soundtrack worthy if there's four really good songs to consider. So that's it. Here's to hoping that Balto 3 has the same, if not better beauty of Balto 2, but I doubt it.
